A STORY ABOUT MY HOME AREA AND THE SURROUNDING
My name is Hilder S. Anami, I was born on 12 March 1987 in a small village in western part of Kenya called Kambiri which is my home area in kaka mega.
I am so glad to join this project as a learner, hope we shall work cooperate and work together as
one.
At the moment am busy at school since its my last year in high school I have to work very hard to meet my future dream as academic work is concerned also very competitive.
I’m looking forward to completing my high school education this year by the end of November this year
2004.
More about my self. My hobbies are making new friends, traveling, helping the needy, reading the bible, having heart for children, playing hockey, watching movies and cartoons.
To my career, I wish and would like to become either a teacher or a nurse or an orphanage. If my parents or my brother
in-law Christian, my sister Rosie, or if any one will be able to pay for me. Because I still have much interest to learn more. The big problem in Africa, like in our society is that one cant
pursue her/his on career, because may be the parents are not able to pay for it. So the parents sometimes decides for you another career. Since you’ve no choice you’ve to accept it that way.
The reasons as to why I have liked to join the TQA project is that:
- It’s very caring especially for the young generation this providing good fundamental backgrounds.
- It’s very educational; it also promotes learning skills and standards of the youths. Also I hope, if all goes well it will give me that chance of volunteering and serving others as I have wish for a long time in my life.
- It will enable me to perhaps travel and meet others.
- Also through this can enable one to become a productive person in the society.
- Finally because TQA is great: Thanking you in advance.
Yours Hilder S. Anami.
Here is my brief history and about what I studied. I studied in two different government schools. One in western part of Kenya i.e. my home area also in coast province kwale ( Ukunda village). In
Ukunda I stay with elder sister who pays for my school fees, my parents stays in up country where they do
their farming.
SCHOOLS IN KAKAMEGA (KAMBIRI)
Children's goes to school bare footed, they have to walk all the
way. They got very poor transport. Which means, the area is still very poor and primitive. Our home area is very cold and rocky compared to Ukunda my present home. Students have to
perform some duties before leaving for school, like milking cows, washing and other general cleanings.
Corporal punishment are still administered in schools (weeping, smashing or
beating) is still practiced as one way of disciplines. When students are late to report to schools, failure in class, examinations and to
perform their duties well. They still cling to the mentality of "spare the rods spoil the child". Despite of all these students work very hard and pass there examinations.
They always have a heart of working very hard.
In my home area it's not possible to find any young person at home doing nothing, like if you cant continue with education then they find jobs like taking care herds of cattle, planting crops in big plantations. Compared to Ukunda many young people drop out of schools just to become beach boys/girls because of tourists on the beaches.
In my area there are no private schools, even if it were there I don't think if any parent could take their kids there because they are expensive. Nobody affords to buy all text books required at schools. Also they aren't any school- buses or government transport to collect kids to and fro.
WEATHER IN KAKAMEGA
It's normally very dry cold in all seasons, extra cold in months of April May and June because of rainy seasons also because of the highland of Kenya…..the higher you go the cooler it
becomes! There are tropical rains with thunder and lightening. Vegetation is evergreen.
ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
99% of inhabitants are farmers. They grow cash and food crops e.g. sugar cane to produce sugar.
They got rich soils for farming and they also rear domestic animal, herds of cattle for milk, oxen etc.
People in up country are hard working like a God given gift.
SOCIAL ORGANIZATION
96% are Christians 2% Muslims and 2% culturalist . They are only LUHYA
POLITICAL ORGANIZATION
There is a chief, sub - chief and village elders who maintain law and order in the village, settle land disputes. In our village there are no thefts reports because everyone has the same things his/her
neighbor has.
MY HOME TOWN.
My home town is Kaka mega town its 40km from our village kambiri there is poor transport to get to town there are countable public vehicles/ buses most transportation used are bicycle. Roads are rough, pump get muddy in rainy seasons
Kambiri in general.
There are only two schools in general and a missionary school (catholic) schools plus a couple of government primary schools. Am sure that when the Kambiri students get learning facilities they will work extra hard and improve there knowledge of study
Communication network is unfortunate no land lines, no telephone services. Only post office is their major communication and luckily those who have managed a to afford mobile phones with internet access it sounds strange and nobody bothers GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS.
Government schools in Ukunda are highly populated because it's free and many people have come to settle in
Ukunda therefore different tribes mixed
Each lass from 1- 8 has three or more streams, each stream having more than 50 pupils. Regardless of this many kids still go wondering on the streets/ beaches to win bread for their families. Just because some parents couldn't afford to buy uniforms for the kids
In government schools of Ukunda teachers have got a little to do because since the schools are situated on the beaches tourist center. Most tourists have at least donated some things for the schools and students donate by this on their own.
Also there are no tuition on the schools (extra time teaching) compared to the private schools in
Ukunda. And with this it is a loss to the students because they move to other class even if they are not qualified to proceed to another class.
Why? To create room for others. The 8.4.4 system i.e. the first 8 years one should be in primary, 4 years secondary and another 4 years university. But for secondary and university its not compulsory.
It's only when you are enable to pay for your child then he/she can proceed in all those stages after 8 years study you've to do a national examination to qualify you to proceed with another stage.
For those who can not afford they end up being beach boys, engage in early marriages, and pick pockets robberies e.t.c. because of the mixed tribes people differ in characters from others. |
