Mount Kenya

Day 3 and 4 - On our way to Mount Kenya. For the first time we travel on the bumpy roads of Kenya. We travel through the high plains and pass small Kikuyu villages. Finally we leave the asphalt road and the last miles we ride a muddy, dusty and slippery road up the mountain. The road ends on the camping ground. We will stay here for two nights. The view from the camping ground is fascinating. We are on the edge of the jungle. We stay in small wooden cabins. Each cabin is decorated in a certain theme. And each cabin has an open fire place. Our son Frank almost died when his fireplace did not work properly during the night. It was scary to see all the smoke coming out his cabin. Lucky for him he decided to listen to some music first before he went to sleep. So he could smell the smoke and was not killed by the coal monoxide.
We went to a waterfall near the cabins and it was fascinating to see the very tall fern. Most of them were 15 feet or more high.
The next day we hiked through the jungle. Alas, we did not see elephants. We heard that people see often elephants on the edge of the jungle, near our cabins. We lost our way in the jungle and we came back more than one hour later than we expected.
The lodge and cabins are owned by a Dutch woman. The hospitality was great and so was the food. From the veranda of the lodge you have a spectacular view on the jungle. In the distance you could hear the sound of the Colobus Apes.
After a good second night rest on the mountain (we did not use the fire place of course), we left the area to travel to National Reserve Shaba. First part of the road was of course the same bumpy, muddy and slippery road. We made a photo stop near some fields with Tea and coffee. (More on the Shaba page)
